Finance minister’s former commune has highest debt in Luxembourg

Mamer, where Finance Minister Gilles Roth was mayor for over 20 years, has accumulated debts worth more than €80 million, data published by the Home Affairs Ministry on Wednesday showed.

The ministry in answer to a parliamentary question published the debts of Luxembourg’s 100 municipalities as of the end of last year. Communes are funded through a mix of state subsidies but also local taxes levied, for example.

A handful of 17 communes do not have any outstanding debts with a lender, the ministry said. That list includes the capital, Luxembourg City, but also Hesperange, where employees over a span of 19 years embezzled more than €5…
